Why we do this campaign?

  • There are too many plastics in the ocean. It’s likely that about 10m tonnes of plastic currently ends up in the oceans each year. In 2010 scientists from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis and the University of Georgia in Athens estimated the figure as 8m tonnes, and forecast that to rise to 9.1m tonnes by 2015.

  • The same study, Published in the Journal of Science in 2015, surveyed 192 coastal countries contributing to ocean plastic waste, and found that Asian nations were 13 of the 20 biggest contributors.

  • INDONESIA is the 2nd country polluting the ocean the most.

A team of researchers in the United States and Australia led by Jenna Jambeck, an environmental engineer at the University of Georgia, analyzed plastic waste levels in the world’s oceans. They found that China and Indonesia are the top sources of plastic bottles, bags and other rubbish clogging up global sea lanes.

  • Together, both nations account for more than a third of plastic detritus in global waters, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The original source data can be found here.

  • We want to start from Lombok.  Currently, There are still lots of Local Business using single use plastic straws. That fact triggers Gumi to work closely to locals cafes and restaurants to convince them starts shifting to other alternatives for their beverage. With free alternatives, we believe it will work easier and at least introduce how they can decrease their plastic waste (trigger their awareness).
  • Clean beaches, that’s all we want. No more sickening footage of animals having plastic straws & cutleries stuck in their noses or microplastics inside their bodies. We have to end the single use plastic habits.
  • We want to build a community of like-minded people! We are sure that one of you have you ever feeling sick of the plastic polluted environment around you  and wanted to contribute more than being a single fighter Let’s join our community! .
  • Local Economic empowerment. Contributing in this campaign means you are also supporting the livelihood of local craftmakers (mostly are women) in a small village of Lombok, see more here. Previously, they works as labors in local rock miners with income less than 1 USD per day, now they will get more than that amount by making Bamboo Straws. More income with less risk.
  • Helping Rebuild Lombok after Earthquakes. Given the situation that some areas of Lombok experienced destruction due to  7,0 Magnitude Earthquakes, thus more financial income is needed. By purchasing our bamboo straws helps the mothers and youth to be stronger.
